Two
Anniversaries for FNF in 2008!
Welcome to the first edition of our eNewsletter in
2008.
This
year
is a special year for FNF in general – and for the
India
Office in particular. Fifty years ago, the first
President
of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss,
and other
liberals founded the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung in
Bonn, and
40 years ago FNF started with its project work in
India with
a seminar on entrepreneurial social responsibility.
The Foundation
cooperated with the "Leslie Sawhny Programme" –
its first partner organization in India. Both
anniversaries
will be celebrated in due form. On May 18, a festive
event,
in the presence of the German President Horst
Köhler,
will take place in Bonn, to be followed by a
high-level international
conference in Berlin on "Masterplan 2050: Strategies
for a Free World" on May 21 and 22. In India we will
host a Liberal Convention on September 27 in Delhi.
Among
others, IFAN gave us some valuable suggestions on
the concept
of this event during its annual meeting in Mumbai
this April.
Have a look what else happened since the beginning
of 2008!

other
countries in all parts of the world. In South Asia,
we currently
maintain three offices: the Regional and India

The
Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit reaffirms
its
policy on Tibet |
|
| |

|
The
Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit does not
change its policy on Tibet. This was decided
unanimously by
the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, chaired by
Dr. Jürgen
Morlok. At the same time reports are refuted which
claim that
the Foundation would have steered Anti-China
protests through
the "5th International Tibet Support Groups
Conference"
from May 11-14, 2007 in Brussels, which had been
co-organised
by the Foundation. Among others the Chinese news
agency Xinhua
has been spreading such insinuations.

50th Anniversary of the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für
die Freiheit
|
|
| |
|
When
committed liberals and Federal President Theodor
Heuss met
fifty years ago at the Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn
on May
19, 1958 to found the Friedrich Naumann Foundation
they acted
in the precise style of a vibrant democracy: they
showed civic
involvement. Were those founders still among us
today they
would be proud of what they began then.

Campaign
against torture in India. |
|
| |
In
the third year of the implementation of the
EU-FNF supported
National Project on Prevention of Torture in
India,
the focus is on the advocacy and lobbying. The
fact
finding and intervention data in all the nine
states
are complete and cases are identified for
hearings during
the state level public tribunals. The recently
concluded
Public Tribunal in Varanasi (28-29 April,
2008) was
a very important event in the state of Uttar
Pradesh
from the point of civil society groups and its

for individual rights.

Economic
Freedom prerequisite for development |

Economic
Freedom and Political Freedom influence the

Foundation
for Liberty and moderated by the German
expert, Dr Stefan
Melnik. The seminar highlighted the manifold
relationships

to pettypolitics: Calls for electoral reforms |
|

"Make
PPP strategy meaningful for economic progress"
It is shameful for this country not to have
achieved
the desired progress and development targets
even after
60 years of independence. The retardation
could be attributed
to petty politics that has been virulent and
prevalent
in Sri Lanka, said Karu Jayasuriya, Minister
of Public
Administration and Home Affairs, at the Key
Person’s
Forum conducted by the Small and Medium
Enterprise Developers
(SMED), a project of the Federation of
Chambers of Commerce
and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and
