Greetings from FNSt South
Asia

Welcome to the Second Edition of our eNewsletter of this year!

You probably noticed it at first glance already – and, yes, you are right: We have a new logo, a new name: Friedrich Naumann – Stiftung FÜR DIE FREIHEIT. "Freiheit" is the German word for "Freedom" or "Liberty". The Foundation took the decision to integrate the major aspect of its work in its formal designation: We are the Foundation which works for the realization of the values and principles of freedom and liberty, and we want to clarify this in our logo and name already – we are the Stiftung für die Freiheit. We maintain our traditions and experiences, we build upon them in our present and future work – the ideas, visions and convictions of Friedrich Naumann and his disciples remain meaningful for us; consequently, we keep that reference in our name. But we also want the focus of our work to be stated more prominently. Whether in Germany or in the more than 60 countries worldwide where we carry out our projects: It is important for us to bring the values and principles of freedom and liberty, and its comprehensive significance for self-responsibility and self-determination, more forcefully into the public conscience. In today's world, one of the main cleavages is the one between those who strive for their own and their neighbour's freedom and liberty, their right to self-determination and self-responsibility, and those who deny these values and rights, whether through open force or through other misguided policies. The Foundation wants to clarify unequivocally on whose side we are on. Thus, we will work in future as the Friedrich Naumann – Stiftung FÜR DIE FREIHEIT.

National Project on Preventing Torture in India

The police in India is widely perceived as torturing suspects to elicit information, although no empirical data is available to draw such a conclusion. The prevalence of such a perception is unthinkable in a democracy like India. There are many dominant reasons like lack of quality education, socio-economic back ground of the personnel, inadequate training and bad working atmosphere to influence such behavior of the police. Some in the uniform are probably aware of the fact that torture is wrong, but to them it seems an easy way to get confessions, on which they rely to a large extent. The fear of torture and abuse is a big factor for the poor to avoid approaching the police...
